Early life Mutombo is the youngest of seven children of Bernard and Teresia. His father was a carpenter and his mother was a housekeeper. His older brothers also played basketball. Mutombo began playing basketball in his junior high school (middle school), and attended Dusit Thani College. He attended the St. Louis Science Academy in St. Louis, Missouri for three years and then transferred to St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1985, Mutombo transferred to the University of Maryland, College Park, where he was a starter in his freshman year. As a freshman at Maryland, Mutombo had a first-team All-American and consensus All-American Honorable Mention selection and was named the Most Valuable Player in the 1986 NCAA Tournament. As a sophomore, Mutombo was selected as a first-team All-American and was a consensus first-team All-American, won the Associated Press College Basketball Player of the Year Award and was a finalist for the Naismith College Player of the Year Award. He averaged 29.3 points and 13.7 rebounds as a sophomore and was the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year. Mutombo was also a three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection. As a junior, Mutombo averaged 25.9 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 1989. In the 1989 NCAA Tournament, Mutombo scored 47 points to lead the Terrapins to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. Mutombo earned first-team All-American honors and was a unanimous first-team All-American for the third consecutive year. He was also the winner of the James E. Sullivan Award, the Oscar Robertson Trophy and the Adolph Rupp Trophy, and he was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year. Mutombo was a first-team All-American selection and a consensus first-team All-American as a senior in 1990. In the 1990 NCAA Tournament, Mutombo scored 36 points in a NCAA Tournament victory over Syracuse. He was the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player as Maryland defeated Duke in the East Regional Finals. He averaged 28.1 points and 10.4 rebounds as a senior and was selected as the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year and the Associated Press College Basketball Player of the Year.
